Professor Maher Gandhi appointed Chief Executive Officer of Mater Research

Professor Maher Gandhi has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Mater Research and Director of MRI-UQ, effective 1 May 2019.
 
Professor Gandhi is a previous winner of the prestigious Australian Society of Medical Research Clinical Research Award and has a long-standing and well-respected history of research studies focusing on immunity and identification of novel biomarkers. 
 
With nearly three decades of experience as a clinician Professor Gandhi has built an international reputation for research excellence and will work to ensure connections across health, education and research to build a stronger Mater.
 
A Specialist Haematologist for 16 years, Professor Gandhi's medical speciality training was completed in the UK in Cambridge and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, and in Toronto Canada. He completed a PhD in Viral Immunology in Cambridge, came to Brisbane on a Fellowship in 2003, and has stayed here supported by uninterrupted NHMRC funding since 2005.
 
His past appointments include Chair of the Australasian Leukaemia Lymphoma Group Scientific Sub-Committee and Chair of the Metro South HREC. Professor Gandhi’s research interests relate to the tumour microenvironment in lymphoma. He is passionate about promoting translational research and personalised medicine, implementing interdisciplinary research, innovative clinical trials, and forging stronger links between scientists and clinicians.
 
Professor Gandhi said he was looking forward to ensuring Mater Research meets its scientific, research and commercial objectives.
 
“I am very much looking forward to developing the strategic direction of Mater Research and identifying, promoting and nurturing relationships with government, philanthropic organisations, other medical research institutes, hospitals, other research organisations and industry,” Professor Gandhi said.
 
“I will be focused on driving the process of further developing a world-class medical research institute based upon a commitment to academic medicine, to discover, develop and translate medical research and on integrating with the areas of excellence within the health services provided by Mater Health.”
 
Whilst centred on Mater Research, the role will have close involvement with Mater Health, Mater Education and Mater Foundation.
