Dr Peter Steer has commenced his appointment as Mater Group Chief Executive Officer.

Dr Steer brings with him extensive clinical and leadership experience, having been the Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London, and prior to that was involved in the merger of Royal Children’s and Mater Children’s Hospitals as CEO of Children’s Health Queensland.

Dr Steer said it was an honour to hold the position of Mater Group CEO, especially at such a pivotal time in Mater’s history.

“It’s a privilege to be in this role at an important time with Mater recently repositioning as a group to incorporate health, education and research,” Dr Steer said.

“I genuinely believe that this major strategic move for Mater will not only foster further collaboration between Mater staff but will also create a positive change in the way that healthcare is delivered to our community.

“I look forward to working with our highly-skilled Executive team and the Mater Group Board who have done an exceptional job in governing Mater through immense change as the healthcare landscape continues to evolve,” he said.

Dr Steer is not new to Mater, having commenced his medical career at Mater South Brisbane in 1982 after graduating from The University of Queensland

He worked at Mater’s Adult and Children’s Hospitals until 1987, then after several years in New Zealand and Canada with further training in Neonatology, he returned to Mater Mothers’ and Children’s Hospitals in 1991 and continued there until 2001.

“My professional life began at Mater and it’s really great to be able to return at this stage in my career,” Dr Steer said.

“From the day I started working as a young doctor at Mater, I have never forgotten the genuine compassion and dedication of my colleagues who embodied the values established by the Sisters of Mercy.

“Their legacy is still very much alive today; and it’s an honour to be leading Mater Group as we carry those values forward to promote a healthy community,” he said.

Mater Group Chair, Terry Crawford welcomed Dr Steer to Mater.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr Steer return to Mater with his extensive global knowledge and expertise,” Mr Crawford said.

“Not only is Dr Steer a well-regarded clinician, his administrative experience in successfully leading large, complex health organisations, means he’s a perfect fit to lead Mater into a new era.”
