Mater-Queensland Family Cohort

Project type/s Cohort study
Project status Planning/Submitted for approvals

This is a pilot study to test the feasibility of a 10,000 family cohort at the Mater Mothers’ Hospital and across Queensland. The landmark project, assessing the health of the large group of newborns and their parents over three decades, will be the nation’s first major cohort study to investigate causes of disease by using biological data to establish links between risk factors and healthcare outcomes.
Families will be recruited during their first antenatal visit to Mater Mothers’ Hospitals. Researchers will then assess the health of the fathers; monitor the mothers’ health during pregnancy; track the family health outcomes from pregnancy until the year after birth; and follow the health and social experiences of the babies and their parents well into the future.
