All Human Research Ethics Applications including low risk review

All new applications to MML HREC are required to be submitted via the ERM platform.

Preparing your application

Documentation you are required to provide in your application include:

  • Protocol (see Guide to writing a research protocol for more information)
  • Participant Information Sheets and Consent Forms
  • Cover letter – what you are hoping to achieve by conducting this research – higher degree, change patient care, present or publish your findings
  • Justification for Waiver of Consent (if relevant)
  • A CV of each researcher involved in the project at any Mater site (CV’s must be submitted to the MML HREC office every 2 years)
  • Data collection tool/s
  • Any other study documents

Please refer to the checklist for full details.

Completion and Submission of your Application

To submit your research HREC application (including low risk review), complete the HREA in ERM, uploading all required documents and submit to MML HREC. If you have completed your HREA in hrea.gov.au, then this form can be imported into ERM.

You will need to obtain relevant signature/s for your HREA before you can submit it for review.  Only the CPI is required to sign except in the case of students (including those conducting research as part of a higher degree).  In this case, supervisor/s must also sign the application.

Low Risk Requirements

If you have requested a Low Risk Review in your HREA :

  • your application will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the HREC between meetings
  • if your HREA contains a request for a waiver of consent, the waiver will need to be reviewed at the next full HREC meeting
  • you are not required to provide hardcopies of your application documents.

Greater than low risk review requirements

If your application is greater than low risk:

  • your submission will be reviewed at a full HREC meeting (view the 2018 Meeting dates)
  • your complete submission must be received by the HREC Office by midday (12pm) on the meeting closing date
  • you will be required to submit four hard copy sets of all study documents, individually stapled and collated into four bundles.

If you are posting your application documents or sending them via courier, please send to:
