Student Travel Awards

Each year, Mater Research invites PhD and MPhil students to apply for a Mater Research Student Travel Award to attend a national or international conference. These competitive awards will assist towards conference expenses up to $1000 for each successful recipient.  There are two rounds per year.  To be eligible:

  1. You must successfully complete a confirmation of candidature milestone
  2. You must apply before your thesis submission
  3. You must be a student of Mater Research
  4. If travel award is being used to support conference attendance, you must be presenting at a conference.

2018 application dates

Round 1 
Applications open: 1 March 2018
Applications close: 31 March 2018

Round 2
Applications open:  1 July 2018
Applications close:  31 July 2018

Dr David Serisier Travel Award

To honour the memory of Dr David Serisier, a scholarship valued at $5,000 per year is offered to assist towards travel, accommodation and conference expenses for Higher Degree Research (PhD and MPhil) students to present Mater Research data at an international conference.  To be eligible:

  • You must be a student of Mater Research
  • You must have successfully completed your second milestone
  • You must apply before submission of your thesis
  • You must be presenting research undertaken at Mater at an international conference

Applications for the 2018 award open in June 2018.

Doctor Laurence Catley Clinical Student Award

The Doctor Laurence Catley Clinical Student Award will be awarded to a Clinical Researcher who has made a significant contribution to Mater Research and the community in the year prior to application.

The recipient of the Doctor Laurence Catley Clinical Student Award will receive a $1500 travel award to attend and present at an overseas conference.

To be eligible: 

  • The student must have been studying at the Mater during the six months prior to the award application due date and successfully passed Confirmation of Candidature.
  • Students must be studying towards a PhD or MPhil Degree (Students conducting Masters Projects on site are not eligible).
  • Student must indicate:
    • Scientific/Clinical Achievements (60% weighting)
    • Contribution to Community (30% weighting)
    • Other Achievements (10% weighting)
  • Students will be assessed relative to opportunity.
  • A recommendation from the Principal Advisor must be attached to the application (no more than a half page).

Applications for the award will open in September 2017.

Mater Higher Degree Research Student Award (Scientific)

The Mater Higher Degree Research Student Award (Scientific) will be awarded to a Scientific Researcher who has made a significant contribution to Mater Research and the community in the year prior to application.

The recipient of the Mater Higher Degree Research Student Award (Scientific) will receive a $1500 travel award to attend and present at an overseas conference.

To be eligible: 

  • The student must have been studying at the Mater during the six months prior to the award application due date and successfully passed Confirmation of Candidature.
  • Students must be studying towards a PhD or MPhil Degree (Students conducting Masters Projects on site are not eligible).
