LOCUS: Long-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Children After In Utero Surgery for Spina Bifida

Project type/s Cohort study
Project status Completed

This is a prospective cohort study of children with myelomeningocele (spina bifida) exposed to prenatal surgery at the Mater Mothers' Hospital, South Brisbane—the first and the only site in Australasia to perform this groundbreaking procedure.

The primary aim is to describe the neurodevelopmental outcomes to age 30 months of these children relative to those with postnatal surgery for spina bifida.

Results from this study will allow us to benchmark our performance of this procedure with the findings from the Management of Myelomeningocele Study, the original clinical trial conducted in the USA. In addition, these results may contribute towards a valuable repository of information where little evidence is available in order to understand its efficacy in terms of developmental and functional implications.
