Research Week 2026

Join us for Mater Research Week 2026 (14–18 September) as we celebrate research, innovation and the people driving better health outcomes across Mater. 

Throughout the week, Mater People can learn:

  • How to begin a research journey at Medical Grand Rounds
  • Explore research opportunities at our Research Discovery Booths
  • Hear from emerging research leaders at the Mater Research Showcase: Emerging Leaders
  • Engage in a lively Ethics Debate exploring whether AI should have a role in human research ethics committees. 

We are also pleased to promote the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences (HMBS) Research and Innovation Week event, hosted by The University of Queensland, which provides an additional opportunity to connect with the broader research community. 

What's on

Medical Grand Rounds

Monday 14 September | 1:00–2:00pm
Location: To be confirmed

Kick off Mater Research Week with a special Medical Grand Rounds session, How to Start Your Research Journey.

This practical presentation will provide clinicians and staff with an introduction to research at Mater, including key steps for getting started, navigating ethics requirements, and connecting with available support and opportunities.

Research Discovery Booths

Tuesday 15 September | 9:00am–3:00pm
Location: Level 3 Linkbridge, Mater Hospital Brisbane

Drop in and explore the many ways research is making an impact across Mater. 

Meet researchers, clinical trials teams and research support staff, learn about current projects and services, ask questions and discover opportunities to get involved in research. 

The booths will showcase clinical trials, biomedical research and the wide range of support available to researchers.

Mater Research Showcase - Emerging Leaders

Wednesday 16 September | 12:00–2:30pm (followed by networking and refreshments)
Location: Princess Theatre, South Brisbane

Join us for an inspiring showcase of Mater's emerging research leaders. 

Hear from Early Career Researcher Seeding Grant finalists, Future Leaders Fellows and award recipients as they share their research, achievements and impact. 

Following the showcase, attendees are invited to stay for networking over drinks and light refreshments, providing an opportunity to connect with colleagues and celebrate research excellence across Mater.

Ethics Debate

Thursday 17 September | 12:00–1:00pm
Location: Cronin Room

Join a thought-provoking debate on the topic Should ChatGPT be a member of our Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)?

Featuring a diverse panel of clinicians, researchers, ethics experts and consumer representatives, this lively session will explore the opportunities, risks and ethical considerations associated with the growing use of artificial intelligence in research governance.

HMBS Research and Innovation Week Event (UQ)

As part of the broader research celebrations occurring across Queensland, we are pleased to promote the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences (HMBS) Research and Innovation Week event hosted by The University of Queensland.

This event provides an opportunity to connect with researchers from across the sector, learn about leading research initiatives and engage with the wider health and medical research community.
