Mother and Baby

Improving health in pregnancy, childbirth and early life.

The Mother and Baby Research Program is studying the pathophysiology and improving clinical management of pregnancy complications and optimising the care of women during healthy pregnancy. It is focused on improving women’s postnatal and broader gynaecological health.

Supported by Mater Foundation through the Mater Little Miracles Research Centre, the Program is continuing to advance the care and outcomes for sick babies and studying the relationship between fetal development, early life experience and lifelong health.

Greater knowledge of pregnancy complications and more effective diagnostics and care will reduce risks during pregnancy and childbirth and help ensure lifelong health for newborns.

As the home of Australia’s largest and most experienced maternity services provider, Mater delivers more than 12,000 babies every year.

At Mater Research, we continually strive to enhance and improve care and treatment through our leading Mothers and Babies research program, combining clinical and biomedical research to create brighter, better futures for the next generation.

Introducing the Mater Little Miracles Research Centre to honour Sister Angela Mary.

Through Mater Foundation, the Mater Little Miracles Research Centre has been launched to honour the 100th birthday of an exceptional and visionary leader of Mater, Sister Angela Mary. This ambitious project will deliver transformational research and outcomes in an area of healthcare so close to Mater’s heart.

This Centre will both underpin and extend Mater Research’s renowned Mother and Baby program, pioneering more national and international breakthroughs, across:

  • Extremely premature babies
  • High-risk pregnancies
  • Growth and development
  • Maternity
  • Stillbirth.

Mater Little Miracles Research Centre for mothers and babies will stand as a beacon that leads the international research community and delivers better outcomes, measured by the lives it will save, and the futures it will empower.
