Mater Research appoints new Head of Education

Mater Research is delighted to announce the appointment of Career Track Fellow Dr Kylie Alexander as incoming Head of Education, commencing in January 2026.  

Dr Alexander brings exceptional experience in research training, student support and leadership, strengthening Mater Research’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of researchers. 

An integral member of the Mater Research community since 2016, Dr Alexander is part of the Stem Cell Biology Research Group and is a former member of the Mater Research Student Committee where she served as Deputy Chair for a term. 

She has supervised numerous Higher Degree Research (HDR) and undergraduate students, helping to foster an inclusive and supportive environment where students can thrive academically and personally. 

Beyond her committee work, Dr Alexander has contributed to Mater Research through her own research achievements.  

As a Career Track Fellow, she has a special interest in neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO), which causes debilitating bone growth around joints in patients with spinal cord injuries. Dr Alexander played a pivotal role in solving a century-old mystery of why the condition occurs – and how to prevent it. 

Mater Research Executive Director Professor Allison Pettit said the Head of Education position played a critical role in shaping the future of research education. 

“Kylie’s experience and commitment to building a positive student culture will ensure our education programs continue to grow and succeed,” Prof Pettit said. 

She said Dr Alexander’s appointment provided an opportunity to celebrate the incredible contribution of Associate Professor Paul Dawson, who has served as Head of Education since 2016. 

“Paul has served our student committee with warmth, dedication and pragmatism,” Prof Pettit said. 

“Working closely with Sarah Doyle and the Mater Research Student Committee, he has fostered a vibrant student community that celebrates achievements and supports one another through challenges. 

“His legendary dad jokes in the weekly student email will not be forgotten!” 

A/Prof Dawson will continue to lead the Neurodevelopmental Research Group, which focuses on preventing cerebral palsy in preterm infants, non-syndromic intellectual disability and autism.
