Mater Research future leaders sparkle at awards night

Monday 08 November 2021

The future is bright for Mater Research as demonstrated so clearly at the recent Mater Research Future Leaders Symposium.

The annual symposium, held at TRI, provided a wonderful opportunity for students, research staff and professional staff to come together to celebrate the considerable achievements of our early career researchers.

The evening also provided our bright minds with an opportunity to explain the importance of their work to Mater Foundation donors and supporters who attended the event.

The prestigious Higher Degree Research Dr David Serisier Student Training Award was won by Thomas Mullins from the Queensland Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre group who works on pregnancy related complications.

The 2021Mater Research Early Career Researcher Prize was awarded to Dr Katie Brooker who is focussed on how we can support doctors to achieve clinical excellence when treating clients within the Autism Health Pathways.

The Mater Research Higher Degree Research Biomedical Prize was awarded to Liam O’Brien who works on preclinical animal models for better cancer immune therapies.

Dr Andrew Swayne received the Mater Research Higher Degree Research Clinical Dr. Laurence Catley Prize for his research into assessing the impact of autoimmune encephalitis in Queensland.

Congratulations also to the two 2021 Mater Research Early Career Researcher Seeding Grants winners, Dr Kavita Bisht who won the Biomedical grant, and Dr Katie Brooker who was named the Clinical and Health Service Research grant winner.
