Strong Families Research Group

The Strong Families Research Group is committed to developing research that is based upon the health priorities of communities with unique needs including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, refugees and migrants, and broader rural and remote populations.

The health priorities of these groups go beyond the physical to encompass mental wellbeing as well as spirituality, connection to land, culture and community. As such, effective research to support health outcomes for these identified distinctive populations needs to be multi-disciplinary, thoughtful, strengths-based and focused on health outcome equity.

The Strong Families Research Group is undertaking work directly with community groups across Queensland to ensure that the voices of these populations are represented accurately in its research. Queensland’s diverse populations and communities are driving the research agenda and focus for the Strong Families Team. Research programs occur at the pace requested by communities and using approaches approved by communities and partners. The Group is developing its programs in this area and is ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and wider community-led organisations are collaborators and partners in research to ensure any research can be effectively translated into health deliverables that meet the priorities of each community.

We're co-designing health research with Indigenous communities

We've visited more than 10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout Queensland, engaging with over 230 people to hear their stories and talk about the importance of early life.
